Research Spotlight: New Evidence Supporting Shockwave Therapy in 2025
At Resolve Chiropractic, we pride ourselves on delivering evidence-based care - and part of that means staying up to date with the latest research. This week, we’re highlighting new studies from 2024-2025 that strengthen the case for shockwave therapy as a safe, effective option for a range of chronic pain conditions.
What the Research Says:
✅ Shockwave + Nutraceuticals for Tendinopathy
A June 2025 randomized controlled trial in Frontiers in Rehabilitation Sciences found that combining extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) with nutraceutical supplements significantly improved tendon healing and pain reduction compared to either treatment alone. The study concluded that this combination enhanced collagen remodeling and reduced inflammation — accelerating recovery in cases like Achilles or gluteal tendinopathy.
✅ Shockwave vs. Laser Therapy
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Lasers in Medical Science (April 2025) compared ESWT and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for musculoskeletal pain. Across 12 studies, ESWT produced better outcomes in terms of pain relief, functional improvement, and long-term results, particularly in tendinopathies and plantar fasciitis.
✅ ESWT for Hip & Pelvic Tendinopathies
A review in the HSS Journal (April 2025) concluded that shockwave therapy is an effective, non-invasive treatment for chronic tendinopathies around the hip and pelvis. These include gluteus medius tendinopathy, hamstring tendinopathy, and adductor-related groin pain - common issues we see in runners, CrossFitters, and weekend warriors.
✅ Shockwave for Frozen Shoulder
An updated May 2025 meta-analysis in Physical Therapy journal found that shockwave therapy significantly improves pain and range of motion in patients with adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) in adults with type II diabetes. The study also found that combining ESWT with guided rehab provided even greater benefit, aligning with our clinic’s integrated treatment approach.
✅ Shockwave vs. Standard Care for Knee Osteoarthritis
A July 2024 RCT in Scientific Reports compared shockwave therapy to standard conservative care in patients with knee osteoarthritis. After 8 weeks, the shockwave group showed greater reductions in pain and improvements in daily function. The researchers noted its potential to delay or reduce the need for injections or surgery in mild-to-moderate OA cases.
